Nonimportation Agreements

One of the many great issues that Colonial American society had to suffer was taxation without representation. During the 1760's and 70's the fight between England and the Colonists grew stronger. Colonists argued that Parliament had no right to tax them because it was their colony. The British continued to levy taxes on Americans which led to several ways of resistance. One of the strongest and most effective ones being the nonimportation agreements.

The nonimportation agreements consisted of boyccotting all mercancy that came from England. The Colonists were stubborn and firm on this decision. This caused many companies to go bankrupt and created the necessity for the colonists to produce what they would consume. This movement, along with many others was led by the Sons of Liberty. The nonimportation agreements were so succesful because they froze the economic flow and consistant income of money for England.

American colonists united in this extreme boycott and were faithfull to it for a long time. This effective way of expressing rebellion led to their voice being heard and made them strive for success. The nonimportation agreements created a strong bond between colonists and united them in a fraternal way. Without them, who knows if the colonists would have been able to accomplish all that they did.
